I feel like this is a sensitive and touchy subject haha. Kids just want to have fun and parents just want things to be organized. Either way, it can be hard to find a system that works for your family. Today, I wanted to share our toy storage system and what works for us.
My whole theory is Sloane can be as messy as she wants- within reason. But there has to be some sort of order so at the end of the day we can pick it up and not see it. I’m all for organized chaos! And when I was thinking about toy storage in our play room, I really wanted to make sure she was able to get the toys down herself and it was easy for her. So that is something important to remember too. She can easily grab bins from the bookshelf herself and she can open the cabinet under our TV too.
My secret is bins and more bins. And then shove those bins into some sort of storage compartment. My favorite bins are these white ones, but it looks like Target only has this gray version now! They come in small, large and extra large depending on your needs. Here and here are some similar options. I also really like these bins because they are cute! I remember registering for them at my shower and thought they were just so cute. We use the small size in our bookshelf and we also have the large size that we use for bigger and bulkier toys.

We have had this cabinet from Target for some time now. And when I bought a new buffet for our dining room it migrated into our play room. But it offers a lot of storage! I add baskets in here and some of her bigger toys are in here too. Sloane can easily open and close the doors so she can get in there herself.
I also bought this bookshelf when I was thinking of toy storage ideas. Originally, I wanted the Ikea version because it was longer and I had it under our TV, so I needed the length. Then things sort of got switched around and we added our white cabinet under the TV. My point is, there are cheaper options from Target that you can get that give you the same look like this one or this one. It has worked really well for us storing her books on the bottom (her favorite ‘toy’ to play with), adding bins and then displaying her bigger toys up top. She can’t quite reach the top so I have to help her with those, but she isn’t shy about asking either!
Another important tip is I try and clean out her toys about twice a year. She has a summer birthday so I always clean it out before her birthday getting rid of toys she hasn’t played with in awhile, missing pieces, toys she has outgrown, etc. And I do this again right before Christmas. These are great time of the year to purge because she always get tons of toys for her birthday and Christmas!
